Taxi Drivers Targeted by Brazen Thieves in Portsmouth

Portsmouth cabbies have been left fuming after a recent wave of smash-and-grab raids. Over 40 taxis in the city have been broken into, with thieves snatching cash from coin dispensers and stealing valuables.

Thieves Strike Boldly in Broad Daylight

The daring crooks have been hitting taxis parked outside drivers’ homes – even when lights are blazing inside. One local driver posted a warning on Facebook after his window was smashed and his cash box stolen at 11.30pm while his car sat in the driveway.

“Just had my driver’s side window smashed and my change dispenser stolen. Not happy at all! We’re self-employed and this just steals our livelihood. They didn’t care that the house lights were on,” the furious driver wrote.

Neighbours reported spotting two lads on push bikes near the scene.

Cabbies Sound the Alarm on Social Media

The Aqua Car driver’s post sparked a flood of responses from fellow Portsmouth taxi drivers. Many shared their own experiences of break-ins, especially around the Stamshaw and Hilsea areas.

  • “Two boys on bikes were seen cycling away from a taxi in Hilsea last night,” one said.
  • “Mine was hit in Stamshaw too. Someone must know who’s behind this,” another added.

Police Issue Warning, No Arrests Yet

A police spokesperson confirmed the uptick in vehicle break-ins, mostly targeting taxis with visible valuables left inside.

“People must take responsibility and not leave valuables in their cars. This spike is down to thieves after cash and easy picks. No arrests have been made yet, but we’re appealing for witnesses to come forward.”

Drivers in Portsmouth are urged to double-check their vehicles are secure and keep cash and valuables well hidden to avoid falling victim to these crafty crooks.
