Dash Cam Danger: Could Your Insurance Be Invalid?
UK drivers have been hit with a serious warning about dash cams that could cost them dearly. While these gadgets are praised for protecting motorists from scams and catching bad driving, a costly mistake when installing them might leave you uninsured.
Dash Cams Boom, But Beware the Hidden Risk
Dash cams are booming in popularity, with an estimated 2.9 million UK drivers now using them, according to the RAC. Many insurers even offer lower premiums if you have one installed.
But experts warn some motorists could be shooting themselves in the foot by hard-wiring their dash cams directly into their car’s electrical system instead of just plugging them into a cigarette lighter or USB socket.
Hard-Wiring Your Dash Cam? Tell Your Insurer!
Graham Conway, Managing Director at Select Van Leasing, explained the problem: “A plug-in dash cam is seen as a simple accessory by most insurers. But a hard-wired dash cam counts as a ‘modification’ to your vehicle. You MUST notify your insurer if you have one fitted this way.”
He added, “It’s frustrating that doing something to protect yourself might backfire, but failure to disclose a hard-wired dash cam could leave you uninsured—even if it records crucial evidence in an accident.”
Insurance Comparison Services Confirm: Declaration Is Key
Confused.com confirmed that any permanently fixed dash cam needs declaring to insurers. Not doing so risks your claim being rejected, no matter the footage you capture.
This warning serves as a wake-up call. If you’re installing or have a hard-wired dash cam, check your insurance policy and be sure you’re fully covered.
Stay Safe, Stay Covered
- Dash cams protect against fraud and illegal driving
- Hard-wired dash cams are classed as vehicle modifications

With dash cams becoming a must-have on UK roads, don’t let a simple oversight leave you stranded without cover. Play it safe: tell your insurer and keep your premiums protected.
