Shocking Video Shows Woman Phone-Driving at 60mph on the M25
A jaw-dropping clip has emerged showing a woman using her mobile phone while hurtling down the M25 at around 60mph.
The footage was shared by Surrey RoadSafe, a joint effort between Surrey Police and Surrey County Council to cut road deaths and serious injuries. It shows the driver steering with one hand and fiddling with her phone in the other.
Driver Claims She Was Using Maps – Not Good Enough
According to Surrey RoadSafe, the woman was caught red-handed texting or swiping on the motorway. When stopped, she insisted she was just using her phone’s Maps app.
Surrey RoadSafe said: “This is not a defence. If you hold your phone and the screen is lit, you’ve committed an offence.”
The law is clear: holding a phone while driving is illegal, regardless of the app you’re using.
Fined £200 and Six Points on License
The careless phone user got hit with a £200 fine and six penalty points on her driving license. A harsh but necessary penalty given the dangers at speed.
UK Laws on Mobile Phone Use Behind the Wheel
- Using a mobile phone, sat nav, tablet or any data device while driving or riding a motorcycle is banned — even if not on the internet.
- Texting, calling, browsing, or taking photos/videos while driving is illegal.
- Allowed exceptions include making emergency calls (999 or 112) when stopping is unsafe, being safely parked, contactless payments when stationary, or using devices for remote parking.
- Hands-free use is allowed via Bluetooth, voice commands, dashboard mounts or built-in sat navs — but devices must not block your view of the road.
Surrey RoadSafe summed it up on social media: “Driver seen & recorded by #VanguardRST using her phone whilst driving on the M25 at approx 60mph. Issued a TOR – 6 points, £200.”
Remember, no call or message is worth risking lives on UK roads.
