Rioters went wild, throwing punches, kicks, and hurling bottles at police. The Garda Public Order Unit was rapidly deployed to contain the chaos and restore order amid the violent clashes.
Garda Commissioner Slams ‘Lunatic Hooligans’
“I think there’s disgraceful scenes in terms of a major investigation, the maintenance of a scene and the gathering of evidence. We have a complete lunatic hooligan faction driven by far-right ideology, and also then this disruptive tendency engaged in serious violence,” Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said outside Mountjoy Garda Station.
Harris vowed to bring offenders to justice and urged the public to be wary of fake news spreading on social media. He stressed the need for facts, not rumours.
Police Mobilise 400 Officers to Tackle ‘Gratuitous Thuggery’
Chief Superintendent Patrick McMenamin labelled the violent protests “gratuitous thuggery,” revealing 400 officers were involved in the response. Some Gardaí were attacked, but thankfully no serious injuries have been reported.
He reassured the public that Dublin city centre is now calm and returning to normal, though police remain on alert to keep the peace.
