Tragic Blaze Claims Life in Islington Flat Fire

A deadly fire tore through a ground-floor flat on Rotherfield Street just before 1am on Tuesday, 24 January 2023. Despite heroic efforts, one man lost his life in the inferno.

Massive Emergency Response at the Scene

The London Fire Brigade scrambled four fire engines and 25 firefighters from Islington, Shoreditch, and Euston stations. Firefighters in breathing apparatus rushed inside the burning four-room flat to rescue two men. One man was taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service, while another was sadly declared dead at the scene.

Emergency services worked fast. The blaze was reported at 12:50am and brought under control by 2:21am. Alongside the firefighters, police officers, paramedics, three ambulance crews, a rapid response paramedic, and the London Air Ambulance all attended.

Investigation Underway

On Tuesday morning, a strong police and fire service presence remained, including forensics officers from the London Fire Brigade’s fire investigation unit. The cause of the fire is currently unknown and under thorough investigation by the Met Police and fire officials.

LFB spokesman: “Sadly, a man has died following a flat fire on Rotherfield Street in Islington last night.
