Tribute to Kirby: Essex’s Hero Search and Rescue Dog Dies Aged 12

Kirby, The Canine Lifesaver, Passes After Cancer Battle

Kirby, the legendary English Springer Spaniel, has sadly died at 12 following a battle with cancer. The beloved search and rescue dog, who joined Essex County Fire and Rescue Service (ECFRS) from London Fire Brigade in 2012, was put to sleep on 11 September.

Though Kirby officially retired early last year, he remained an active part of the service. His predecessor, Darcy, retired in 2017 alongside handler John Ball.

National Search and Rescue Star

Station Manager Scott Meekings from Urban Search and Rescue paid tribute: “Kirby was a key player nationally in the canine world for USAR and will be greatly missed both locally and nationally.”

He added poignantly: “The modern format of USAR was born out of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, so 11 September was a fitting date for Kirby to pass away on.”

Life-Saving Missions and Public Star

  • In April 2012, just three days after completing specialist training, Kirby helped rescue a man trapped for hours beneath a collapsed house in Clacton following an explosion – finding him in under a minute.
  • He was part of major rescue efforts including the Didcot Power Station collapse in 2016, working alongside police, ambulance services, and the military.
  • Kirby took on daring tasks: airlifted by helicopters, abseiling down buildings, always ready to save lives.

Community Hero and Media Favourite

Kirby was a regular at public events and charity fundraisers, raising hundreds of pounds and meeting thousands of residents across Essex with handler Graham Currie. One standout cause was Stanley’s Heroes, raising over £10,000 for firefighter Rob Newman’s son.

The dog was a TV star too, featuring on the BBC’s Mega Cities with Andrew Marr and ITV’s Inside London Fire Brigade.

In 2017, Kirby, Graham, and fellow search dog Jarvis earned the Outstanding Award for Community Safety at the ECFRS Celebrating Our People Awards. They were runners-up for the same award in 2018.

Kirby’s legacy as a brave and devoted rescue dog will be remembered across Essex and beyond.
