Skeletal Remains Found at Midleton Construction Site Spark Fresh Garda Appeal
An Garda Síochána has launched an urgent public appeal over skeletal remains discovered back in January 2021 at a construction site along the Midleton to Youghal Greenway. The case remains open as officers scramble to identify the woman found at Roxborough, Midleton, Co. Cork.
Clues Point to Elderly Woman, But ID Still Elusive
Gardaí released images of footwear recovered at the scene to jog public memory. Forensic exams suggest the remains belong to a woman aged 70 or older. She was between 5′ and 5’2″ tall with a large build, wore dentures, and suffered arthritis.
Despite thorough DNA testing against the National DNA Database and cross-checks with missing persons records, no matches have surfaced.
How Were the Remains Discovered?
Workers on site first alerted Gardaí after spotting a human skull near the Shanty Path. The area was quickly secured, with State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster conducting a post-mortem at Cork University Hospital.
Forensic experts and crime scene officers combed the site for nine gruelling days amid rough weather, eventually uncovering complete skeletal remains along with a shoe and clothing item.
Investigation Intensifies – Public Help Needed
The probe is led by a senior officer at Midleton Garda Station and now includes cutting-edge science like carbon dating to pinpoint the time of death. Officers stress that any detail, no matter how small, could break the case.
“We are committed to identifying this woman and giving her the dignity she deserves,” a Garda spokesperson said.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Midleton Garda incident room on 021 4621550, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any local station.
