Postie’s Shocking Find: Abandoned Newborn Baby Discovered in East London
A routine mail run turned into a dramatic rescue after a postman found a newborn baby boy abandoned in a basement flat in east London.
Postman’s Gut Feeling Saves Newborn
Edward Holton, 36, delivering post in Hackney on Saturday morning, spotted a strange bundle wrapped in a blanket outside a vicarage on Sandringham Road. Initially thinking it might be an injured cat, he couldn’t shake the unease.
“There was no noise or movement and I carried on delivering, but that blanket kept playing on my mind,” Edward recalled.
He convinced his colleague Paul Smith to double back and take a closer look. When they opened the blanket, they found a tiny baby boy, less than a day old, left all alone.
Quick Thinking Keeps Baby Warm and Safe
Paul wrapped the baby up and cranked the van heating. Meanwhile, Edward ran back to the vicarage, knocking on the door to raise the alarm. Emergency services arrived swiftly and took the infant to hospital.
“I felt so relieved when the police called later to say the baby was healthy and doing well,” Edward said.
In a touching tribute, hospital staff even named the boy “Edward” after his rescuer.
Call for Mother to Come Forward
Edward hopes the mother will be found and get the help she needs. “It’s a worry thinking about what she might be going through,” he said.
Local Royal Mail workers are proud of their colleagues. Vinnie Micallef, East London CWU secretary, said:
“We’re all really pleased baby Edward is OK. We may even organise a fundraiser to help.”
Police continue their efforts to contact the baby’s mother as the community rallies in support of the abandoned newborn.
