Fake AGO Calls Ripping Off the Public!
Scam alert! Fraudsters are using bogus Attorney General’s Office (AGO) phone numbers, including the official public enquiry line 020 7271 2492, to con people out of money.
How the Scam Works
- Callers pretend to be from the AGO or HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
- The AGO public enquiry number even shows up on your caller ID to trick you.
- They demand payments to “drop criminal charges” or settle fake tax debts.
Warning: These calls are NOT from the real AGO or HMRC. The AGO will never ring you asking for bank details or money over the phone.
What To Do If You Get A Call
Hang up immediately if someone claiming to be from the AGO demands cash. Then, report the scam by emailing: 123. Got dodgy texts? Send them to 60599.
Fighting Back Against Scammers
HMRC’s Cyber Operations team is on the case. They’re working alongside telecoms firms to shut down scam numbers and block spoofed caller IDs. But stay alert – these scammers are relentless!
