Kent Police Cadets Scoop Top Volunteer Honour on King’s Birthday

Kent’s Volunteer Police Cadets have bagged the prestigious King’s Award for Voluntary Service – the highest UK accolade for volunteer groups, on a par with an MBE. The announcement came today, coinciding with His Majesty The King’s birthday celebrations.

Young Cadets Making Big Community Impact

Since launching in 2015, the Kent Police Cadet scheme has been inspiring youngsters aged 11 to 18 to support community policing. Cadets take part in event stewarding, crime prevention, and act as youth advisors—working side-by-side with officers every week to gain real policing experience.

Chief Constable Tim Smith hailed the cadets and their leaders. “Our cadets are vital members of the Kent Police family,” he said. “This award recognises their achievements and the dedication of their leaders.”

A Thriving Programme with Life-Changing Opportunities

  • Currently, 434 cadets and 120 volunteer leaders operate across Kent
  • Cadets earn qualifications like the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and first aid training
  • They enjoy educational trips, including expeditions to historic sites and climbing Mount Snowdon

The scheme focuses on building life skills, not just policing careers—though many cadets have progressed into Kent Police roles, including officers and Special Constables.

Gavin McKinnon OBE, Director of Citizens in Policing, said: “Our cadets learn vital decision-making skills and form lasting friendships. This award is a brilliant tribute as we near our 10th anniversary.”

Kent Police’s Unique Double Honour

This marks Kent Police’s second national volunteer award, having previously won The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2014 for the Special Constabulary. Kent remains the only UK force with both top honours.

Crime Commissioner Matthew Scott added, “The cadet scheme offers fantastic opportunities for young people right across Kent. I congratulate all involved on this well-deserved recognition.”
