Migrant Violence Spirals Out of Control in Northern France
Northern France is gripped by soaring migrant violence, with police officers and locals increasingly under attack. The latest outbreak erupted yesterday morning in Grand-Fort-Philippe, near Dunkirk, when a gang of migrants turned hostile during a police swoop on a suspected people smuggler.
Violent Clash During People Smuggler Arrest
Police were trying to stop a vehicle driven by a man suspected of ferrying migrants. The suspect was found carrying life jackets and marine gear linked to inflatable migrant boats. When officers arrested him, he fought back violently. That’s when dozens of stranded migrants, stopped from launching their boat, joined in the fray and attacked police.
The chaos quickly escalated. Migrants set fires that needed firefighters to step in, while three local residents’ vehicles were badly damaged amid the mayhem.
Tensions Soar After Back-to-Back Mornings of Violence
This was the second morning running that violence flared in the area. Just two days earlier, a riled-up group of migrants smashed up a dozen cars after police blocked their boat launch. Residents are now terrified for their safety as tensions boil over.
“The situation is turning into a guerrilla war,” said Sony Clinquart, mayor of Grand-Fort-Philippe. “People are deeply concerned. There used to be compassion for these people. Now there’s just a mixture of anger and fear and a desperate need for something to be done.” He added locals regularly spot groups of hostile young men loitering outside homes.
Authorities Demand Urgent Action as Violence Spreads
Local officials have urgently called on the French Prime Minister’s office for stronger, coordinated intervention. Police reinforcements from Lille and Valenciennes have been sent to the area to try and restore order.
The violence isn’t just aimed at police or residents. Rival migrant gangs and people smugglers have also clashed. In April, a migrant was stabbed to death in a brutal fight at the Loon Plage camp near Dunkirk involving smugglers and migrants. Migrants frequently brawl over boat access and smuggling fees. Earlier this year, a migrant arrived injured in Dover after a knife attack during a scuffle with smugglers on a French beach.
