Man Nabbed in Lowestoft Terror Probe After Grenades and Guns Found
A 59-year-old Suffolk man, initially arrested over firearms offences, faces fresh terror charges after police uncovered a stash of dangerous weapons during a raid in Lowestoft.
Pre-Planned Police Raid Yields Military Grenades and Firearm
On Sunday, 28 July, Suffolk Constabulary swooped on a property in Normanhurst Close. Officers found two military grenades and a gun inside. The grenades were later confirmed inert, and the firearm appears to be a replica.
The suspect was first cuffed around midday on suspicion of firearm possession.
Counter-Terrorism Team Steps In
Further investigation revealed several chemicals at the scene, prompting the Met’s Counter-Terrorism Command to join the case. The man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of planning and instigating terrorist acts.
He is now held under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000 at a Suffolk police station.
Safety Measures and Community Reassurance
- Neighbours from three nearby homes were evacuated as a 100-metre police cordon was set up.
- The large cordon was lifted yesterday evening, but a smaller one remains around the property.
- Suffolk Safer Neighbourhood Teams will continue patrols to reassure locals.
Detective Chief Superintendent Alexis Boon said: “Suffolk Constabulary acted swiftly to secure the area. We have found nothing to suggest an ongoing threat to the public. We thank the community for its patience as enquiries continue.”
Investigations are ongoing as police piece together the full picture behind this chilling find.
