Thousands of Police to Guard London This Weekend

Nearly 2,000 officers from the Met and UK forces will patrol central London this weekend in a massive operation covering Remembrance events and a major Palestine Solidarity Campaign march.

This weekend holds national importance. Tens of thousands will gather to honour Remembrance Day, but this year’s security task is bigger and tougher than ever.

Cracking Down on Disorder and Hate Crime

The police operation doubles officer numbers from previous years. On Saturday, 1,850 officers will be on duty, with 1,375 on Sunday. The force is prepared to stop any disruption to solemn Remembrance ceremonies while managing protests and protecting communities — especially London’s Jewish population, who have expressed rising fear amid recent tensions.

“Everyone has the right to feel safe, travel freely, and worship without intimidation.”

Police powers are beefed up to quickly arrest anyone trying to cause trouble, incite violence, or commit hate crimes. Since violent protests erupted after 7 October attacks, over 100 arrests have been made for supporting banned organisations and serious offences.

Heavy Restrictions on Protests and Key Sites

  • Exclusion zones ban protestors from Whitehall, Horse Guards Parade, Westminster Abbey’s Field of Remembrance, and the Cenotaph — which will have round-the-clock police presence.
  • Pro-Palestinian marchers must stick to a pre-approved route, ending by 5pm, and are barred from sensitive areas near the US and Israeli embassies.
  • A dispersal zone covers major central spots like Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus to stop breakaway groups causing mayhem — refusing to disperse could mean arrest.
  • Section 60 and 60AA stop-and-search powers run from 10am Saturday to 1am Sunday across Westminster, Wandsworth, and Lambeth, allowing officers to search for weapons and demand removal of face coverings used to hide identity.

Shielding Communities from Threats, Including Convoys

  • Police are monitoring car convoys travelling into London to prevent them passing through Jewish neighbourhoods while hurling abuse and flags.
  • Specialist officers in cars and motorcycles are ready to intercept troublesome vehicles coming from across the UK.
  • Any unlawful behaviour by convoy members will be swiftly dealt with.
  • British Transport Police are also on alert to protect poppy sellers from intimidation at stations and busy spots.

The public order teams will be led by Deputy Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor on Saturday and T/Commander Karen Findlay on Sunday, ensuring tight control over the weekend’s sensitive events.

London’s streets will be locked down tight as police protect the city’s right to remember and protest peacefully — no messing around.
