Police Federation Warns: Don’t Take a Swing at Officers at This Weekend’s Protests

John Apter, National Chair of the Police Federation of England and Wales, has fired a fierce warning to anyone planning violence against police at this weekend’s protests.

Peaceful Protests at Risk of Turning Violent

“After the recent Black Lives Matter demonstrations, we know more protests and counter-demonstrations are lined up across the country this weekend,” Apter said.

“We respect the right to protest, but let’s be clear: the pandemic isn’t over. Gatherings of more than six people break the law and put public health at risk.”

Violence Against Police Not Acceptable

Apter highlighted a disturbing rise in attacks on officers. “Although most protesters have been peaceful, a small, violent minority has launched vicious assaults on those simply trying to keep order.”

“Our officers need full protection including helmets and shields when facing these threats. Violence will never be tolerated.”

Stay Safe, Keep It Peaceful

“Our message is simple: don’t join gatherings that endanger public health. If you support Black Lives Matter, find other ways to show it. But if you do come out, stay safe, keep your distance, and protest peacefully. Criminal behaviour and attacks on police will be dealt with firmly.”
