Police Federation Chief Issues Stark Warning Ahead of Weekend Protests

John Apter, National Chair of the Police Federation of England and Wales, has fired a blunt warning to anyone planning violence against officers during this weekend’s protests.

Black Lives Matter Protests Spark Concern

“Following the recent Black Lives Matter protests, we know more demonstrations and counter-demonstrations are set across the country this weekend,” Apter said. “We understand the strong emotions involved and respect the right to protest, but the ongoing coronavirus crisis means gatherings over six people break the law and risk public health.”

Violence Against Police: Completely Unacceptable

Apter condemned the “shocking and unacceptable” attacks on officers seen in London and elsewhere. “Our brave officers are just doing their job to keep people safe, yet some face vicious assaults by a small violent minority. This is not on, full stop.”

He stressed the need for police to be properly equipped with helmets and shields when faced with violent troublemakers.

Stay Safe, Stay Peaceful

Apter’s message to the public is crystal clear: “Don’t join gatherings that endanger public health. Support Black Lives Matter in other safe ways. But if you do attend, stay safe, keep your distance, and protest peacefully. Any violence towards police or others will be met with zero tolerance.”
