Two Jailed Over Michael Boyle’s Fatal Stabbing in Southwark
Two men have been locked up for the brutal murder of Michael Boyle in Southwark. Geoffrey Downs, 37, has been handed life in prison with a minimum of 25 years, while Derek Green, 48, was sentenced to over two years for helping an offender.
Deadly Stabbing at Sir Robert Peel Pub
On Sunday, 25 February, police were called to the Sir Robert Peel Public House in Langdale Close, SE17. There, Michael Boyle from Galashiels, Scotland, was found with a stab wound. He was rushed to hospital by the London Ambulance Service but sadly died on 10 March.
A post-mortem confirmed the cause of death as multiple organ failure caused by the stab wound to his chest.
Chilling Court Details
- Downs was initially charged with attempted murder, possession of an offensive weapon, and common assault on 26 February.
- His charge was later upgraded to murder at the Old Bailey on 26 March.
- He admitted guilt to murder and weapon possession on 30 July.
- Green was charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice on 13 March, pleading guilty to assisting an offender.

“Mr Boyle was defenceless when attacked by Downs that fateful February morning,” said Detective Sergeant Stuart Reeves from the Met’s Homicide and Major Crime Command. “No sentence can mend the terrible loss Michael’s family and friends face. We hope today’s verdict offers them some comfort.”
