Foiled Heist at Dulwich Picture Gallery: Rembrandt Paintings Targeted
Police thwarted a daring burglary at Dulwich Picture Gallery, where two priceless Rembrandt paintings were targeted. The alarm went off at 11.30pm on Wednesday, 13 November, triggering a rapid police response.
Intruder Strikes, Officer Sprayed with Unknown Substance
The thief forced entry and snatched the two exhibition pieces. Officers arrived within minutes, searched the area, and confronted the suspect. During the chase, the intruder sprayed an officer in the face with an unknown chemical, allowing a narrow escape. Luckily, the officer wasn’t seriously hurt and stayed on duty.
Swift Action Leads to Recovery of Priceless Art
- One painting was recovered by police on the spot.
- The second was found quickly with security’s help.
- Neither artwork left gallery grounds and both remain safe in Dulwich’s care.
Flying Squad Launches Investigation
Detective Inspector Jason Barber said: “This was an audacious, well-planned burglary attempt targeting two priceless paintings. Thanks to the quick action of gallery staff and officers, these works of art were not stolen. Both paintings were recovered and secured.”
