Police Crackdown Hits Basingstoke Car Meet Chaos
On Sunday 11 December, Basingstoke police launched a no-nonsense operation, targeting illegal and dangerous driving across the town. Over 20 vehicles were stopped and checked, resulting in multiple seizures and fines.
Cars Seized and Drivers Busted
- Three vehicles were seized for having no insurance.
- One car banned for bald tyres – off the road immediately.
- A motorist stopped for driving without a licence.
- One car caught without road tax.
- Two drivers fined on the spot for skipping seatbelts.
- Two vehicles had illegal tinted windows – owners quickly removed tints after police intervention.
Drugs and Immigration Arrests
During the operation, a small stash of cannabis was confiscated. A 27-year-old Tadley man was arrested on suspicion of an immigration offence and handed over to enforcement.
Cracking Down on Car Meets and Anti-Social Behaviour
About 30 motorists gathered at the Leisure Park on Euskirchen Way were engaged by officers. They advised vehicle owners on illegal modifications and gathered intelligence for future action.
S59 warnings — which warn drivers and vehicles about causing alarm or distress — may be handed out soon. Repeat offenders risk vehicle seizure.
Chief Inspector Scott Johnson, District Commander for Basingstoke, said: “I’m pleased with the results of last night’s operation and glad our presence is curbing anti-social behaviour linked to unauthorised car meets.” “This operation, part of Op Chromium, shows we’re serious about tackling these issues. We’re committed to protecting our community and will not tolerate anti-social vehicle use in Basingstoke.”
Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones added: “This crackdown is a fantastic example of police, councils, and the public working together. Unauthorised car meets can be dangerous and anti-social, but police are taking decisive action.”
“Thanks to Councillor Simon Bound for raising this concern and to the community for reporting issues. Together, we’re sending a message: illegal driving will not be tolerated.”
