Crackdown on Child Exploitation: Over 100 Rally at Westfield Cinema

More than 100 people packed into Vue Cinema at Westfield Shopping Centre on March 15 for a powerful event led by the Specialist Crime Command’s Modern Slavery and Child Exploitation team and Stratford’s Safer Neighbourhoods Team. Partnering with the Safer Business Network, they aimed to shine a light on child exploitation and how businesses can fight back.

Operation Makesafe: The National Shield Against Child Exploitation

Operation Makesafe is a no-nonsense national campaign focused on raising community awareness about child exploitation. Its goal? To arm businesses and organisations with the training and insight they need to spot and stop predators in their tracks.

Mass Arrests Highlight Urgent Need for Public Vigilance

Earlier this month, Met officers smashed county line gangs in a week-long blitz, arresting over 200 suspects and seizing more than £1 million. Crucially, 177 vulnerable people were safeguarded from harm. This crackdown underscores why Operation Makesafe relies heavily on the public and business owners to spot warning signs and alert police before tragedy strikes.

Experts Call for Businesses to Take a Stand

Detective Constable Jules Benrad of the Met’s Modern Slavery and Child Exploitation team said:

“Since 2022, all Met call handlers and Basic Command Unit exploitation teams have been trained. Over 3,000 businesses and key partners have learned how to spot the signs.”

Mohammed Qazi from Safer Business Network added:

“It was a very successful day – thanks to everyone involved. Business leaders must take an active role and safeguard their premises against child exploitation.”

He concluded: “Partnership working lets us tackle child exploitation and modern slavery head-on. With ongoing training and awareness, we can amplify our impact across the region.”
