Armed Police to Patrol Appleby Horse Fair Amid Violence Fears
Section 60 Order Activated to Prevent Clashes
Police have slapped a Section 60 order on Appleby ahead of the annual Horse Fair as intelligence warns of groups planning serious violence. Superintendent Matt Kennerley revealed officers are gearing up to tackle feuds boiling over between rival factions this weekend.
Stop and Search Powers Turbocharged
The new Section 60 order, effective from 9.30am on 14 August until 12.30am on 15 August, hands police the power to search anyone without suspicion of weapons. As Kennerley puts it, “These powers will help our officers to keep people safe.”
Armed Officers Ready to Strike
- Increased police presence in key hotspots and peak times
- Armed officers on the ground to swiftly deal with any outbreaks of violence
- Open call for public to report any criminal activity or planned disorder
Supt Kennerley warned, “Anyone planning violence is no friend to the community – including local residents and the Gypsy and Traveller groups who want a safe, peaceful Fair.”
