Fake Cop Scams Seniors Out of Thousands in Bolton
Greater Manchester Police are hunting a crook who’s been phoning elderly victims, pretending to be a detective investigating bank fraud. Since April 4, five linked incidents have hit areas around Bolton, with the suspect telling victims to withdraw cash for a supposed investigation.
Scammer Targets 70s and 80s in Little Lever, Horwich, and Westhoughton
The conman calls from a withheld number, claiming he’s a detective from GMP. He instructs the victims, mostly in their 70s and 80s, to withdraw sums ranging from £2,000 to £70,000. A “colleague” then arranges to collect the cash face-to-face — often sporting tracksuit bottoms and a hoodie.
In two cases so far, the crook has got away with over £6,000.
Police Appeal as One Man Believed Behind Spate of Fraud
Detectives are convinced a single man is responsible, deliberately picking vulnerable targets. They’re searching for more victims in Bolton and surrounding areas, urging anyone with info to come forward.
Warning from Detective Chief Inspector Dean Purtill
“Impersonating a police officer to defraud innocent community members is an appalling offence. We urge anyone who suspects they’ve been targeted by this scam to contact us online or via 101. Remember, no genuine officer would randomly ask you to withdraw money.”
If you’ve been affected or spotted suspicious activity, report it anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or contact Greater Manchester Police through their LiveChat or by calling 101.
