Sussex Police: No Second Suspect After Crawley College Shooting Scare
Man Arrested After Shots Fired at Crawley College
Contrary to social media rumours, Sussex Police have confirmed they are not hunting a second suspect following reports of gunfire at Crawley College on Monday afternoon.
Just after 3.10pm, emergency services flooded in after multiple calls about shots fired on College Road. Armed officers swooped on the scene and arrested an 18-year-old local man within minutes – detained by 3.20pm and still in custody.
Weapon Seized, Two Staff Treated for Minor Injuries
Police recovered a firearm and knife at the scene. Two college staff suffered minor injuries—but crucially, these were not gunshot wounds. Authorities stress this incident is not being treated as terrorism.
Students and staff were quickly evacuated to a safe zone while officers, supported by Explosive Ordnance Disposal experts, combed the buildings. Emergency units from East Sussex 1 and SECAmb also attended.
Searches Find No Further Threats
A follow-up search at a Crawley address in Barton Walk yielded no further evidence or suspects. Roads around the college, closed during the drama, have now reopened.
Crawley College will remain closed to students Tuesday as police carry on with enquiries under Operation Reset.
Police Appeal for Witnesses
“We continue to have a policing presence in Crawley and are speaking to witnesses. We urge anyone with information to come forward,” said Chief Superintendent Howard Hodges. “Thanks to those who helped detain the suspect before police arrived, and to all students, staff and the public for their cooperation.”
If you have any information, call 101 or report online quoting Operation Reset.
