Wrong-way driver on M20 stopped after crash with police car
A motorist heading the wrong way down the M20 sparked chaos before being finally stopped by police using a “tactical contact” manoeuvre. The terrifying incident unfolded on Friday evening when drivers spotted a car hurtling westbound on the eastbound (coastbound) carriageway towards traffic.
Police forced to ram vehicle after driver speeds towards them
Officers from kent/" title="Kent">Kent Police’s Road Policing Unit rushed to the scene after multiple 999 calls from alarmed motorists. They first tried to slow the car down — but shockingly, the driver headed straight towards the officers.
The police said: “We made tactical contact to safely bring the vehicle to a stop. Amazingly, nobody was injured.”
Following the incident, Kent Police confirmed they have contacted the DVLA to revoke the driver’s licence, vowing no repeat offenders on their roads.
Motorist’s dangerous stunt sparks public relief and praise
The force thanked all callers for alerting them. One woman shared: “The driver came towards my daughter who was absolutely terrified the car was going to hit someone.”
Many readers applauded the police’s calm yet decisive handling of the potentially deadly situation.
Wrong-way driving a notorious hazard on Kent motorways
This is far from Kent’s first run-in with wrong-way drivers. In 2016, a woman’s husband narrowly avoided a head-on crash on the M25. Three years later, police chased a lorry driving the wrong way on the M20 – only for it to vanish before officers arrived.
Police vehicles have borne the brunt before. In 2018, a stolen car pursued down the M20 rammed an officer’s Volvo before being apprehended.
Witnesses have repeatedly reported near-misses and terrifying moments on the M20, including one in 2020 where a car sped at over 100mph the wrong way in the slow lane.
Kent Police’s Road Policing Unit continues to monitor and clamp down on these dangerous incidents to keep drivers safe.
