North Kent Hit by Fake Police Phone Scam

Residents across north Kent are being warned to stay sharp after a spate of phone scams involving fraudsters posing as police officers.

Scam Calls Targeting Bank Details

Since September 1, 2020, Kent Police have recorded 11 reports where scammers called claiming there was a problem with the victim’s bank account. The calls hit areas including Dartford, Higham, Longfield, Rochester, and Gillingham.

In most cases, the crooks claimed to be detectives from London police stations, warning victims their bank cards were being used fraudulently.

£5,000 Stolen in Courier Cash Grab

One victim was even duped into handing over cash to a courier pretending to act for the police, losing more than £5,000 in the process.

Detective Sergeant Marc Cananur of Kent Police’s Serious Economic Crime Unit said: “A police officer will never ask a member of the public to hand over money, nor request banking details or a national insurance number.”

“Most of these incidents didn’t result in money or data being handed over, but people must stay alert. Fraudsters often target the elderly or vulnerable.”

“We take this extremely seriously and are reviewing all reports. Please follow our advice and share it widely.”
