Met Police Gear Up for More Just Stop Oil Chaos in London

The Met Police are bracing for more disruption from Just Stop Oil activists set to hit London streets from 28 November to 14 December. After weeks of chaos, officers promise a swift and tough response.

Commander Warns of Fresh Disruption Ahead of Christmas

Commander Karen Findlay from Met Operations said: “Just Stop Oil has already wreaked havoc on Londoners and motorists on the M25. Now, they’re planning to ramp up trouble in the crucial run-up to Christmas.”

She added, “We have a seasoned team ready with strong policing measures and specialist officers to counter everything from blockades to complex lock-on tactics.”

Police Struggle with Spontaneous Protests, 11,923 Officer Shifts Lost

Unlike coordinated demonstrations, Just Stop Oil activists refuse to share plans or numbers ahead of protests. That forces the Met to deploy more officers than usual, straining resources. Since 1 October, a whopping 11,923 officer shifts have been dedicated solely to tackling these protests.

Findlay voiced public frustration: “A tiny group of activists disrupt businesses, medical appointments, and families trying to collect children. It’s frustrating and unfair.” She urged the activists to engage with police to reduce hassle for Londoners.

Arrests Soar as Met Cracks Down on Protesters

Between October and November, police arrested 755 Just Stop Oil protesters, with 182 charged so far. Findlay reassured Londoners: “The Met is large and resilient. We will keep dealing with knife crime, burglaries, and safeguarding — despite challenges.”

“Where protests veer into criminal activity, we’ll respond firmly and efficiently. We’ll make arrests quickly and restore order. Please don’t take the law into your own hands.”

She concluded: “We’re working closely with the Crown Prosecution Service and courts to hold activists accountable and keep London safe this Christmas.”
