Tunbridge Wells in Kent is the UK’s most dangerous spot for postal workers facing dog attacks, Royal Mail data reveals. Last year, posties endured nearly 2,000 dog bites—averaging over five attacks every single day.

Dog Attacks Jump 15%, Thousands of Workdays Lost

Compared to the previous year, dog attacks on postal workers soared by 15%, causing a staggering 3,014 days of missed work. Royal Mail blames this rise on the dog ownership boom, which swelled from 9.6 million dogs in 2021 to 11 million in 2023.

Tunbridge Wells: A Canine Crime Scene

The TN postcode area around Tunbridge Wells saw 65 of those 1,916 attacks. This grim tally keeps the area in the top ten dog attack zones for the ninth year running. Royal Mail warns, “Even the most lovable dog can be a danger to postal staff.”

Health and Safety Director Lizz Lloyd warns attacks rise when children are off school and dogs left unsupervised. “Dogs left alone in gardens or roaming streets become a threat,” she said.

Kimberley Link’s chilling dog attack last summer left her with permanent nerve damage. “The dog pulled me to the floor, bit my elbow, and tried to sink its teeth into my neck,” she recalls.
