Shock and outrage have rocked Shotton Colliery, County Durham, after vandals chopped down a cherished living Christmas tree just hours after its festive lights went on. Police have arrested two men amid a furious community backlash.
Christmas Tree Vandalised Hours After Lighting
In a brazen attack on Wednesday night (December 10), a healthy spruce tree—freshly decorated and lit—was brutally felled between 10pm and 11pm. Planted in 2014, the tree was a heartfelt memorial to the area’s World War I heroes.
Police confirmed two men, both in their 20s, are in custody. A 26-year-old faces criminal damage charges, while a 23-year-old was released pending further investigations.
Community Left “Devastated” by Mindless Crime
Steve Maitland, chairman of the local residents’ association, said he was “gutted” by the senseless act. “At first, I thought it was a hoax,” he revealed. “But when I saw the tree was gone, I was absolutely devastated.”
Maitland slammed the vandals for their callous disrespect. “They don’t understand the history or feeling behind this. Some who helped fundraise for the tree have passed away. It’s mindless vandalism that’s hurt everyone here.”
Despite the blow, the community has rallied. Funds are being raised for a replacement tree, set to be planted by spring. Meanwhile, a protective sleeve guards the fallen tree’s stump so it can stand proud this Christmas.
Police Crack Down as Locals Demand Justice
The Peterlee Neighbourhood Police Team is keeping tight-lipped but active. The felling has sparked fury among locals who call the crime “devastating” and a slap in the face to local heritage.
The force’s initial public appeal helped lead to the arrests. Residents vow to protect their memorial landmarks moving forward.
