High-speed scooter chase ends in arrest after daring 60mph pursuit through N22

Met Police Tackle Scooter Crime in Wood Green

Two suspects were hauled in after a thrilling police chase in North London early on Saturday, 23 May. Officers from the Met’s Operation Venice spotted a high-powered scooter sneaking behind a van on Bounds Green Road, N22 around 1am.

Reckless Rider Flees Police at Three Times Speed Limit

As the lights turned green, the scooter waited a beat, seemingly sizing up the officers, before zooming off at around 60mph – smashing the 20mph limit.

Despite police signals to stop, the rider tore off towards High Road, Wood Green, weaving dangerously and riding on the wrong side of the road, even darting over roundabouts. The chase sped on past Alexandra Park train station, with the scooter mounting the pavement for 50 metres on Bridge Road before officers closed in.

Arrests Made After Tactical Stop

The police used DNA tagging spray and slow-speed tactical contact to safely end the pursuit without injury to the rider or pillion passenger.

  • A 22-year-old man was arrested for aggravated vehicle taking, dangerous driving, no insurance or licence, possession of cannabis, and failing to stop for police.
  • A 20-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of allowing herself to be carried on a stolen vehicle.

Both remain in police custody.

Operation Venice Vows Zero Tolerance

Sergeant Tony McGovern said: “Operation Venice officers will continue to work around the clock to pursue those who believe they can use stolen motor vehicles to commit serious offences across the capital. With colleagues across the Met, Operation Venice will work to identify and pursue those intent on committing violent and audacious crimes on the streets of London.”
