Chaos at Lewisham Police Station: Mystery Spray Leaves Officers and Detainees Irritated
Lewisham Police Station on Lewisham High Street was rocked on Saturday evening when an unknown substance was sprayed inside the custody suite. The attack left officers and detainees suffering from burning eyes and respiratory discomfort.
Emergency Services Rush to the Scene
London Ambulance Service and the London Fire Brigade were quickly called to the station in Hither Green, SE13. Several people inside the custody suite complained of intense eye irritation after exposure to the unidentified agent. Emergency medics treated affected individuals on site as a precaution.
Police Link Spray to Aggravated Burglary Incident
A Met Police spokesperson revealed that on the morning of March 16, a police officer and two staff members fell ill after dealing with three detainees reportedly sprayed with what is believed to be a form of CS gas during an aggravated burglary.
Later that day, at around 6:30pm, five more staff members required medical attention showing similar symptoms. The custody suite was immediately closed and the detainees were transferred to other South London police stations.
“The two incidents are currently linked,” confirmed the police.
Investigation Underway as Police Probe Motive and Substance
The nature of the sprayed substance and the reasons behind its use remain unclear. Officers have launched an urgent investigation into the incident, which highlights the dangers faced by frontline police and those in custody.
The incident caused a significant emergency response with numerous vehicles attending the police station’s rear. Authorities are expected to release more details as their inquiries progress.
“On Saturday, 16 March, multiple staff required medical treatment after becoming unwell in the custody suite at Lewisham police station. The custody suite was temporarily closed as a precaution and detainees moved,” said a Met Police spokesperson.
