Woman Killed as Van Ploughs Into Pedestrians on The Strand, London

A woman in her 20s has died and two others rushed to hospital after a van mounted the pavement and struck multiple pedestrians on The Strand in central London, police confirmed.

The horror unfolded at around 11:41am on Tuesday near King’s College London and Somerset House, sparking a major emergency response.

Driver Arrested on Suspicion of Drug-Driving

The 26-year-old van driver was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and driving while over the legal limit for a controlled drug. He remains in custody.

Police revealed:

“Three pedestrians suffered injuries, with a woman in her twenties sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the van was arrested and remains in custody. This incident is not being treated as terrorism-related.”

Witnesses said the van hit a group that included young women. Police comforted some victims at the roadside amid the chaos.

Emergency Crews Rush to Scene

London Ambulance Service dispatched ambulance crews, advanced paramedics, an incident response officer, a clinical team manager, and London’s air ambulance. Despite their efforts, one person died at the scene. Two others were hospitalised, one with potentially life-threatening injuries. Another was discharged after on-site treatment.

The London Fire Brigade sent two fire engines and 10 firefighters to assist, declaring their role concluded by just after 1pm.

Strand Closed, Investigation Underway

The Strand remains closed westbound between Surrey Street and Waterloo Bridge. Bus routes including the 9 and 23 are being diverted.

A forensics tent has been erected near the crash site as officers appeal for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward. Anyone with information should contact police on 101 quoting CAD 2771/18MAR or via @MetCC on social media.

Harrowing Scene for Students and Bystanders

King’s College London students described scenes of shock and distress. PhD student Ali, 28, said:

“At first I thought it was a protest because we get those outside campus. But then I saw stretchers. Knowing someone died is heartbreaking — we walk by that crossing every day.”
