Massive Illegal Street Rave in Lambeth Sparks Violence, Injures 15 Police
Police were called to Cecilia Road, Lambeth on the evening of Wednesday, 24 June after reports of a large, unlicensed music event raging in the street.
Officers first tried to get the crowd to disperse, but the revelers ignored them and refused to engage. The scene quickly escalated as more officers arrived, with the crowd turning hostile.
15 Officers Hurt and Police Vehicles Damaged
In total, 15 police officers were injured—none seriously, though two needed hospital treatment. Several police vehicles were also damaged during the chaos.
Four people were arrested on suspicion of assault and public order offences. They remain in custody as the investigation continues.
Dispersal Zone and Section 60 Imposed to Restore Order
Police issued a Dispersal Zone under Section 35 of the Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014, ordering the crowd to leave. The illegal rave was finally cleared by early Thursday, 25 June.
A Section 60 order was then put in place nearby to prevent further violence.
Police Commander Slams Violence and Illegal Gathering
“Our role is to protect the public and ensure guidelines are adhered to in order to prevent the spread of Covid-19, protecting the NHS and saving lives,” said BCU Commander Colin Wingrove.
“Our officers work incredibly hard to engage and explain the public health message and regulations to prevent such gatherings from occurring.
“We received numerous complaints from residents about noise, anti-social behaviour, and violence. These gatherings are unlawful and pose a risk to public health during the pandemic.
“The violence shown towards officers is totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated. An investigation is underway, and those involved will be brought to justice.”
