A fire erupted at Veolia’s Southwark Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) on Monday, November 18, around 12:30 pm. The blaze occurred in the Transfer Station where dry mixed recycling is sorted. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the fire was quickly contained.
Prompt Response by London Fire Brigade
A Veolia spokesperson confirmed that safety protocols were immediately activated:
Safety is a top priority at all of our facilities, and our teams followed procedures to alert the London Fire Brigade, who responded promptly to bring the fire under control. Thankfully, nobody was injured, and we will work with the London Fire Brigade to determine the cause of the fire.
Fire crews worked swiftly to extinguish the flames, ensuring the safety of workers and nearby residents. Investigations are underway to establish the exact cause.
Potential Cause and Safety Reminder
While the cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed, Veolia highlighted the risks posed by improper disposal of hazardous materials in recycling:
“Waste fires often ignite due to flammable items amongst the collected waste materials such as vapes, electrical items, batteries or gas canisters. Residents are reminded to think before disposing of these items and to check their local Council website for safe recycling options.”
The company emphasised the importance of proper recycling practices to prevent such incidents in the future.
Public Safety and Recycling Awareness
This incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with improper waste disposal. Residents are urged to dispose of flammable or hazardous items at designated recycling points to ensure the safety of workers and facilities.
For information on recycling hazardous items, residents can visit their local council’s website or contact Veolia for guidance.
