Landslip Disrupts Train Services to Brighton

Train services in Sussex, particularly between Gatwick Airport and Brighton, have encountered disruptions following a landslip, according to train operators.

Southern Rail reported that the landslip occurred overnight between Hassocks and Burgess Hill, necessitating immediate attention from railway authorities.

While limited services have been able to proceed past the landslip using one of the two available lines, Southern Rail cautioned passengers to anticipate delays on affected routes.

Network Rail engineers are presently at the scene assessing the situation to determine the extent of the damage and formulate a plan for rectification.

As a consequence of the landslip, Southern Rail announced the suspension of services at Burgess Hill, Hassocks, and Preston Park while investigations continued. This disruption also affects Gatwick Express services between the airport and Brighton, which have been temporarily halted.

In response to the disruption, passengers have been advised to utilize their Gatwick Express tickets on Thameslink services at no additional charge, offering alternative transportation options.

Govia Thameslink Railway, the operator of Southern Rail and Gatwick Express, issued a statement expressing regret over the inconvenience caused to passengers and emphasizing their commitment to resolving the situation promptly.

Passengers affected by delays have been encouraged to claim Delay Repay compensation, ensuring that their inconvenience is duly acknowledged and compensated.

As the situation unfolds, Southern Rail has informed passengers to expect alterations to services and a limited number of trains directly connecting to Brighton. Efforts will be made to divert services via alternative routes, such as Horsham and the West Coast or via Lewes, where feasible.

The disruption coincides with the upcoming Brighton Miles accessible running event scheduled for Saturday, preceding the Brighton Marathon on Sunday. The event organizers may need to account for potential transportation challenges caused by the disruption in their planning.
