Massive 2,000lb WWII Sea Mine Blown Up Off Isle of Wight
Bomb disposal divers from Portsmouth have safely destroyed a massive 2,000lb sea mine dredged up by a fishing boat off the Isle of Wight. The seven-foot-long relic, believed to be German and dating back to the Second World War, was hauled in by the Cara Lee near the Needles at around 8am on Saturday.
Explosive Danger Sparks 2-Mile Safety Zone
Despite initial attempts to defuse the mine, it proved far too dangerous to handle. Navy divers swiftly set up a 2-mile exclusion zone to protect the public before carrying out a controlled explosion.
Cheers erupted as the diver successfully attached the detonation charge, sealing the fate of the deadly device.
Isle of Wight Back to Normal After Dramatic Blast
The huge explosion sent shockwaves but caused no injuries. Locals can breathe a sigh of relief after this terrifying WWII ghost from the depths was safely dealt with by expert bomb squads.
