Sprinklers Stop Blaze in Birmingham High-Rise

Just after 2am this Wednesday, around 25 firefighters rushed to a fire at Salisbury Tower in Ladywood, Birmingham. Thanks to quick-acting sprinklers, the blaze was already out by the time fire crews arrived—only three minutes after they were called.

Family Trapped by Smoke, Rescued Safely

A man, woman, and toddler were trapped as flames and smoke filled their flat, their only escape blocked. Staffordshire and West Midlands Fire Control guided the family over the phone to stay safe while help was en route. Firefighters quickly led them to safety, then took them to hospital for smoke inhalation checks.

Electric Bike Chargers Blamed for Fire

The blaze is believed to have started from an electric bike left charging in the hallway of the flat. The bike battery produced thick smoke and fumes that spread quickly, cutting off the family’s route out.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Praises Sprinklers

“Sprinklers save lives – as this incident very clearly demonstrates. It could have ended tragically had the council-fitted system not kicked in,” said Simon Barry, Deputy Chief Fire Officer of West Midlands Fire Service.

“They reduce injuries, protect firefighters, and limit damage to property and the environment. One sprinkler head was right next to the bike charging spot and doused the flames fast.”

Sprinklers Key to Fire Safety in High-Rises

West Midlands councils have backed retrofitting sprinklers in tower blocks, a move welcomed by WMFS. National Fire Chiefs Council research confirms sprinklers activate 94% of the time and are 100% effective in flats, saving lives and controlling fires.

Fire Crews Responded with Full Force

  • Four fire engines
  • One 4×4 Brigade Response Vehicle
  • One aerial platform

Thanks to this swift response and the sprinklers, what could have been a disaster was stopped in its tracks. Residents are reminded how vital sprinklers are for home fire safety.
