Teen Cadet Lewis Gilbert Bags Top Honour
Lewis Gilbert, 17, from Swanley police cadets, has made history as the first cadet in his force to receive a prestigious award. He joins a select group of young people recognised for their dedication and service to the community.
New Role Supporting Kent’s Lord Lieutenant
Lewis will now assist Lady Colgrain, the Lord Lieutenant of Kent, in her official duties and take part in ceremonial parades. This is a massive honour for the young cadet, who has already built an impressive record of community service.
From Neighbourhood Watch to First Aid Hero
- Cadet since age 13, Lewis set up and still runs a local Neighbourhood Watch scheme.
- He has used his first aid skills to help the public on multiple occasions.
- Earned a Chief Officer’s Certificate of Merit after aiding an elderly man who had a fall.
- Helped with a missing person report during a police event by gathering info and alerting fellow cadets.
Cadet Scheme Grows Strong
The Kent Volunteer Police Cadet Scheme launched in 2016 and now boasts over 430 members aged 13 to 17. Cadets dedicate 2-3 hours weekly during term time plus extra volunteering each month. Training covers drills, uniform care, police history, and more.
Praise from Cadet Scheme Boss
“Lewis has shown outstanding commitment, service and integrity throughout his four years as a cadet,” says Anne-Marie Moore, Assistant Manager. “He’s received 12 glowing work reports – one of the highest ever. He volunteers tirelessly at community and charity events, supports police officer training, leads drills, and mentors other cadets. This recognition is well deserved.”
Lewis was presented with his award at a ceremony in Tunbridge Wells on 13 October 2022.
