Tragic loss of a local hero

Folajimi “Jimi” Olubumni-Adewole, a former Harris Academy Peckham student, died in April 2021 after bravely jumping into the Thames to save a woman.

Memorial plaque unveiled by Living Bankside

On January 22, Living Bankside charity unveiled a plaque in Cathedral Square near 1 Bridge—the very spot where Jimi leapt into the river.

Bravery in the face of danger

Jimi and a man, Joaquin Garcia, were walking home from a central London restaurant when they both fell into the water. The coastguard and marine police rescued Joaquin and the woman, but Jimi was lost.

His body was recovered six hours later near London Bridge.

Mayor pays tribute to Bermondsey’s fallen hero

The Mayor of London said, “Jimi Olubumni-Adewole’s extraordinary act of bravery, jumping into the Thames to save a woman from drowning, will never be forgotten.”

He added, “This plaque ensures the Bermondsey boy and hero remains a symbol of light for the city that mourns him.”
