Battery Fires on the Rise: KFRS Warns Over Lithium-Ion Risks
Lithium-ion batteries power everything from phones to e-bikes. But Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) has spotted a worrying jump in fires sparked by these batteries. Over 20 battery-related blazes hit in just three months. May alone saw fires caused by dodgy battery disposal, e-bikes charging unattended, power banks left on beds, and batteries left plugged in for too long.
Why Lithium-Ion Batteries Are a Fire Hazard
KFRS Assistant Director for Response Matt Deadman issues a stark warning. “Lithium-ion batteries are in more and more gadgets. Most are safe, but misuse or faulty gear can lead to fires. Overheating and poor storage are top causes,” he said.
Top Safety Tips to Avoid Fire
- Buy batteries only from reputable retailers – if a price looks too good to be true, it probably is.
- Follow manufacturer instructions for charging and storage.
- Charge batteries during the day when you’re at home.
- Always unplug devices after charging.
- Register your electrical goods at registermyappliance.org.uk.
- Keep batteries away from extreme temperatures.
- Never charge batteries on flammable surfaces like beds or cushions.
- Protect batteries from damage—no crushing, puncturing or water immersion.
Be Fire Ready
Matt Deadman also stresses the importance of smoke alarms: “Make sure you have working alarms on every floor. If they sound, get out, stay out, and call 999.”
Stay safe and don’t let lithium-ion batteries turn your home into a hazard zone.
