Chaos in Abbey Wood: Flash Flood Strands Cars in South London
South London was thrown into chaos Tuesday evening as sudden, heavy floods left several cars stranded in Abbey Wood. The flood hit hard at the busy roundabout where Yarnton Way meets Harrow Manorway, sparking panic among drivers and locals alike.
Fire Brigade Springs into Action – No One Trapped
The London Fire Brigade rushed to the scene at about 6.15pm, deploying four fire engines and around 25 firefighters. Thankfully, no motorists were trapped inside their vehicles. Emergency crews confirmed everyone had evacuated safely from the flood-hit roads.
“A number of vehicles have become stranded in flood water. There are no motorists stuck inside stranded vehicles. Efforts are ongoing to recover the vehicles and clear standing water from the area,” a London Fire Brigade spokesperson said.
Road Closures and Local Reactions
Authorities quickly shut down affected roads and urged drivers to avoid the area while flood waters were cleared. The root cause of the intense flooding remains under investigation.
Locals captured the surreal scenes on camera. One bus passenger joked, “Anyone got a boat?!” Another said, “Everywhere is madness!” while a third cheekily dubbed the flooded zone “a boating lake by 1.”
More Flood Woes Across London
The deluge didn’t stop at Abbey Wood. Firefighters also battled flooding on Nathan Way in Plumstead, with further road closures put in place for safety.
With more heavy rain forecast for Thursday and over 30 flood warnings across the UK, Londoners are bracing for more soggy disruption. Emergency services remain on high alert, proving they’re ready to tackle the UK’s flash flooding head-on.
