Strep A Deaths Rise Sharply Across UK
New data reveals a worrying jump in deaths from Strep A infections since September. England alone has seen 13 fatalities, with two more in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Deadly Strep A Invasive Disease on the Rise
Strep A causes common illnesses like scarlet fever, strep throat, and impetigo. While usually mild, the bacteria can turn deadly when it develops into invasive Group A Streptococcal disease.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reports 652 invasive cases since September. That’s a significant spike compared to the past five years.
Children Hit Hardest This Season
- 85 cases among 1 to 4-year-olds this season, compared to 194 for the entire 2017/18 high season
- 60 cases reported in 5 to 9-year-olds
- 60 deaths across all age groups in England since September
The surge is believed to be driven by high bacterial levels and increased social mixing following pandemic restrictions. UKHSA stresses there’s no evidence of a new Strep A strain.
“We continue to monitor the situation closely and advise seeking medical help if symptoms worsen,” UKHSA said.
