Firefighter Legend Richard Calls Time After 30 Years of Heroics

Richard started his firefighting journey at just 19, joining the Brigade in the early 1990s. From Leytonstone Fire Station to the North East of 1, he’s tackled some of London’s toughest blazes and crises.

High-Profile Incidents and Life-Saving Innovation

  • Fought through the chaos of the 2011 London Riots
  • Braved flames at the Mandarin Hotel fire
  • Heroically responded to the tragic Grenfell Tower fire

Richard wasn’t just on the frontline. He revamped fire response tactics for high-rise buildings, helped launch the Fire Survival Guide App, and secured the Marauding Terrorist Agreement — all vital improvements keeping Londoners safer.

Leading Through the Pandemic Storm

When Covid-19 hit, Richard steered the Brigade through two gruelling years. His leadership ensured the fire service stayed operational, making tough calls to protect both crew and community.

A Firefighter’s Heart Beyond the Job Description

“I’m honoured to have served and proud of everyone I worked with. In moments of crisis, everyone steps up and goes the extra mile for London,” Richard said.

“Fire doesn’t discriminate — whether it’s the richest or poorest address, it’s traumatic for all. I’ll never forget a man who started a fire just to heat a can of beans. After we put it out, my crew went and bought him food. Sometimes being a firefighter means doing the right thing beyond the job.”

Richard’s final roll call saw friends, family, and colleagues gather to salute his three decades of bravery and dedication. London owes him a huge thank you — and best wishes for a well-earned retirement!
