Former Kent Headteacher Among Victims of Deadly Air India Crash
A tragic blow has struck the Kent community as Panna Nagar, ex-head of Northfleet Nursery School, has been confirmed dead in the horrific Air India flight AI171 crash. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner went down just after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, killing all 242 passengers and crew, including 53 British nationals.
Beloved School Leader Lost
Panna Nagar led Northfleet Nursery School for 15 years, from 2005 to 2020. The school paid a heartfelt tribute, calling her a “remarkable leader, mentor, and friend.”
“Panna Nagar was more than just an educator — she was a guiding light, an inspiration, and a champion for every child and member lucky enough to walk through her doors,” the school said.
Staff praised her dedication to creating a warm, supportive learning environment that empowered both students and colleagues.
“The lessons taught, the wisdom shared, and the love given will remain in our hearts forever.”
Crash Investigation Underway
Authorities are probing the cause, with early signs pointing to a possible mechanical failure shortly after takeoff. Witnesses near Gujarat saw smoke and fire as the plane crashed near a residential area close to a university.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) urges those worried about loved ones on board to call the 24-hour helpline at 020 7008 5000 for consular support.
Nation Mourns, Local Community Grieves
The disaster has rocked not just the international community but also Ms Nagar’s hometown. Parents and staff remember her as calm, supportive, and deeply committed to children’s development.
“She was a wonderful presence. So calm, supportive and deeply invested in the children’s growth. Her legacy will live on.”
The UK government is working closely with Indian officials to support victims’ families and coordinate repatriation efforts.
