The fire broke out at 2:44am, engulfing the six-storey block and forcing the evacuation of over 80 residents. Emergency crews rescued 20 people and rushed two to hospital. The London Fire Brigade revealed some of the building’s cladding was flammable, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation in partnership with police.
Fundraiser Hits £7,936 – Council Urges Donations to Aid Victims
The council swiftly set up a GoFundMe page with a £10,000 target to support families who have lost everything, including homes and precious belongings. So far, nearly £8,000 has been raised. Emergency accommodation has been provided, with residents cared for at a rest centre by local councillors and MP Margaret Mullane.
The council appeals: “Please donate funds rather than physical items so staff can focus on supporting those affected.”
Heartbreaking Loss for Couple as Wedding Dress Burns
Among those hit hardest are Lukasz and Agnieszka, a couple set to marry in Poland in two weeks. They lost Agnieszka’s £2,500 wedding dress – collected just days before the fire – and all their belongings. Their story has captured hearts across the community.
Fire Safety Concerns Resurface Amidst Investigation
The privately owned Spectrum Building has a history of fire safety issues. Earlier plans revealed “remedial works” to remove non-compliant cladding from upper floors. Fire Brigade chief Andy Roe warned parts of the building remain unsafe as the probe continues.
Matt Wrack, General Secretary of the Fire Brigades Union, slammed the blaze: “Once again, a fire has erupted in a residential building wrapped in flammable cladding. There needs to be an urgent and swift investigation of how this has been allowed to happen.”
As investigations into the blaze go on, the community’s generosity is offering vital hope to those left homeless. Donations continue to flood in as Barking and Dagenham pull together to help families rebuild their lives.
