A303 Stonehenge Upgrade Gets Go-Ahead: Big Boost for Local Businesses
The game-changing A303 Stonehenge (Amesbury to Berwick Down) project got the green light last month from the Secretary of State for Transport. Beyond improving journeys, it’s set to deliver a massive £39 billion economic boost and create 21,000 jobs. This mega-scheme also offers a golden opportunity for small and medium-sized businesses across the South West and beyond.
SMEs Set to Cash In on Stonehenge Roadworks
Highways England revealed plans today (9 December) at Business West’s virtual Swindon & Wiltshire Business and Economy Meeting, urging local firms to get involved. David Bullock, Project Manager for the scheme, said:
“This project doesn’t just benefit big national and international firms. We’re keen for local and regional businesses to get in on the action. Archaeology specialists and early works contractors will start on site next spring, with more opportunities when the main contractor is appointed later in 2021. We urge businesses to register their interest now so we can help them prepare.”
Training and Support to Help Local Firms Win Contracts
Highways England is partnering up with Swindon and Wiltshire LEP, Business West, the Federation of Small Businesses, and the Supply Chain Sustainability School. They offer free online training covering business ethics, waste management, sustainable procurement, and equality, diversity & inclusion. This helps smaller companies upskill and get ready to bid on big infrastructure contracts.
Preliminary contracts have been snapped up by Osborne Ltd for early works and Wessex Archaeology for digs. Osborne’s Project Director Chris Hudson commented:
“We have tons of experience working alongside Highways England and local groups. We’re committed to keeping communities informed and backing local businesses wherever we can.”
How to Get Involved and Grab a Slice of the Action
In the coming months, subcontractors for plant hire, fencing, catering, cleaning, accommodation, and hospitality will be in demand. Highways England will also host a Meet The Buyer event early next year to showcase training and tendering procedures.
Paddy Bradley, Swindon and Wiltshire LEP Chief Executive, said:
“Small businesses are the backbone of our economy. Getting involved in this project can boost local jobs and strengthen families’ futures.”
Ruth Lambert, Development Manager for the Federation of Small Businesses in Wiltshire, urged:
“We’re spreading the word about this fantastic opportunity. Small business owners across Wiltshire should consider how they can benefit from the project.”
