Scaffolding Crash on Stoke Newington High Street Shocks London

Chaos erupted early this morning on Stoke Newington Church Street after scaffolding collapsed onto a parked car, trapping the driver underneath. The terrifying incident happened at around 6.25am outside a long-shuttered public library, sending wood and metal plummeting to the ground amid fierce winds.

Driver Miraculously Escapes Unhurt

Eyewitnesses reported the scaffolding “tore away” from the building in the high winds. Thankfully, the driver of a black car, initially feared seriously injured, was rescued unharmed thanks to the quick help of passersby.

Emergency Response and Travel Chaos

Police and firefighters rushed to the scene, erecting cordons and closing Stoke Newington Church Street between Edward’s Lane and Albion Road. Transport for London and Hackney Council scrambled to direct clean-up efforts. Bus routes 73, 393, and 476 are diverted, and nearby residents have been evacuated as a safety precaution.

“Stoke Newington Church St is closed between Edward’s Lane and Albion Road for traffic and pedestrians due to fallen scaffolding. Police and council teams are on the scene. Thankfully, no one was injured. Buses are on diversion until further notice. Please avoid the area if possible.” – Hackney Council spokesperson

Locals Count Their Blessings

Photos reveal a mangled mess of timber and metal crushed atop the car. The scaffolding, reportedly three storeys high, had stood for two years. Ibrahim, a local shop owner, told UKNIP:

“We’re lucky there’s no school today — there are usually lots of kids on the street. So lucky.”

Another shopkeeper added:

“It could have been a lot worse. We’re fortunate it’s the school holidays. This street is usually packed with children and commuters at that time.”

Investigation Underway Amid Safety Concerns

High winds are suspected as the cause, but authorities have launched an investigation into how the scaffolding was left standing so long without inspection. Local residents and shop owners demand answers.
