Massive Oil Spill Heads for Kent Coast
An oil slick is set to hit the east Kent coast near Deal today, sparking urgent action from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
Rapid Response Underway
“We have already mobilised our oil spill response contractor to do everything we can to tackle the spill,” said a coastguard spokesperson. Teams are out removing pollutants and working hard to prevent the slick from reaching the shore.
Regular surveillance flights are monitoring the situation closely. The coastguard is updating their response plan as new info comes in. They are also working with local partners to ensure a coordinated effort.
Source and Impact Still Unclear
Samples of the oil are being tested to find its source. Early assessments suggest the spill comes from a single slick rather than a continuous leak.
“Investigations are ongoing, but we see no subsea infrastructure nearby that might indicate a pipeline rupture,” the spokesperson confirmed.
Royal Navy First to Raise Alarm
The slick was initially reported by a Royal Navy vessel. Further checks are underway to determine the nature and size of the spill, with modelling still being updated to predict exactly where the oil will land.
Authorities remain on high alert as the slick approaches the shoreline, ready to ramp up efforts to protect the environment and local communities.
