Cat Owners Face £500 Fine if Pets Not Microchipped by June 2024
Cat owners in England have just 12 months to microchip their pets or risk a hefty £500 fine. From June 10, 2024, it will be law for all cats to have a microchip – putting millions currently unchipped in the firing line.
Millions of Cats at Risk Without Microchips
Statistics show around three million cats in England are still missing microchips. After a 21-day grace period, owners of unchipped cats could face penalties. The government’s crackdown aims to boost cat safety and welfare by cutting down on untraceable pets.
Many Owners Unaware of New Law, Warns Vet
The 2023 PDSA Animal Wellbeing (PAW) Report reveals a shocking 67% of cat owners didn’t even know about the upcoming law. PDSA vet Lynne James stresses microchipping is a one-off cost that offers lifelong protection. “It greatly increases the chances of lost or stolen cats being returned swiftly,” she said.
Easy Steps to Keep Your Cat Safe
- Get your cat microchipped before the June 10 deadline.
- Update your microchip details promptly whenever you move or change phone numbers.
- Remember, keeping the information current is key to reuniting with your pet if they get lost or stolen.
This 12-month heads-up gives cat owners plenty of time to get chips fitted and secure their moggies’ futures. Don’t get caught out – microchip your cat now!
