Eindhoven Airport Grounded by Drone Chaos! The Dutch airport is shut after multiple drones caused major disruption, leaving dozens of passengers stranded. Flights have been diverted, and authorities are on high alert.

Flights Diverted as Airport Closes

Eindhoven Airport has suspended all air traffic. Incoming and outgoing flights are rerouted to Rotterdam, Brussels, and Weeze in Germany. Tonight’s last scheduled flight, a TUI plane from Gran Canaria, was forced to land in Brussels instead.

Passengers onboard got text alerts explaining the diversion was due to drone activity spotted nearby.

Authorities Scramble as Drone Threat Grows

Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans confirmed the shutdown on social media:

“Multiple drones have been spotted at Eindhoven Airport. Civilian and military air traffic has therefore been suspended. Defence’s counter-drone measures are on standby to intervene.”

Police and military personnel are investigating on-site. Officials have not disclosed the exact number of drones, only saying “multiple”.

Stranded Passengers and Flight Chaos

According to Dutch broadcaster NOS, dozens remain stuck in the departure hall, while hundreds were sent home. Arrival boards show no landings today or tomorrow, with departures halted until 6:55 AM local time.

Drone Drama Spreading Across Europe

This incident follows recent drone sightings over airports and military bases in Denmark, Sweden, and Germany. Rising tensions with Russia have Europe on edge.

  • September saw Russian drones enter Polish and Romanian airspace.
  • NATO scrambled jets over Estonia amid similar threats.
  • Earlier today, drones were also spotted near Volkel Air Base, less than 19 miles from Eindhoven, prompting Dutch forces to try and shoot them down.

What To Do If Your Flight Is Cancelled

Passengers delayed or cancelled due to drone disruptions have rights under UK and EU laws. Airlines must provide meals, accommodation, and alternative flights where necessary.

Citizens Advice advises keeping all receipts to claim expenses — but warns costs must be reasonable. Always check your airline’s specific policies, especially if not flying with a UK or EU carrier.
