Royal Mint to Unleash Stunning Waterloo Coins for 200th Anniversary

The Royal Mint is gearing up to launch a dazzling new range of commemorative coins, celebrating over 200 years since the legendary Battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815.

Collectors are on tenterhooks awaiting the official release date, which remains under wraps for now.

Expert Predicts Release to Coincide with Historic Anniversary

Jon White from The Britannia Coin Company in Wiltshire believes the coins will drop around the battle’s anniversary. He says, “The Battle of Waterloo, fought in present-day Belgium, saw the Duke of Wellington’s allied coalition defeat Emperor Napoleon’s forces. This victory ended the Napoleonic Wars, reshaped Europe, and cemented Britain’s military and economic dominance.”

Missing Medal Design Gets Royal Mint Makeover

Back in 1815, soldiers received medals for Waterloo, but a grand commemorative medal for allied leaders never saw the light of day. The design, by Italian artist Benedetto Pistrucci, remained unfinished during his lifetime due to delays.

Now, over two centuries later, Pistrucci’s artwork will finally adorn UK coinage in an exclusive collection titled “The Great Engravers.”

Collectors Eye Up Solid Gold and Silver Masterpieces

Jon White highlights the unique chance collectors have to own remastered historic designs fused with modern tech. The Royal Mint’s exclusive Waterloo collection features hefty two-kilo and five-kilo solid gold coins, along with limited-edition 24-carat gold and 999 silver pieces.

Previous Great Engravers coins sold out in a flash, with values soaring above their original price. Experts predict the Waterloo editions will follow suit, becoming prized treasures.

Two-Part Release Featuring King Charles III’s Portrait

The Waterloo coins will launch in two waves. In 2024, the first release will showcase one side of the original medal with a striking portrait of King Charles III. The other side is scheduled for release in 2025.

Official release dates remain under wraps, but collectors are ready to snap up these historic masterpieces as the 200th anniversary looms.
