Major Blaze Tears Through Glasgow School of Art: Complex Investigation Underway
A huge fire ripped through the iconic Glasgow School of Art, the O2 ABC, and nearby buildings over the weekend. The aftermath has left firefighters battling pockets of flames well into Monday, with a complex investigation now launched to uncover the cause.
Firefighters Fight On After Massive Blaze
More than 120 firefighters rushed to the scene after the alarm sounded at 11.19pm on Friday, June 15. Three fire engines and a high-reach appliance remain in Glasgow city centre as crews continue to douse lingering hotspots.
Assistant Chief Officer David McGown of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service praises the relentless efforts of his team: “Firefighters have been working extremely hard on the scene since Friday night – and continue to do so today.”
Community Impact Feels Heavy
ACO McGown emphasised the significance of the buildings to Glasgow’s community. “We recognise what the Glasgow School of Art building and O2 ABC mean to the people of Glasgow and the impact on smaller local businesses who have also been affected,” he said.
The blaze has deeply affected not just the cultural landmarks but also the surrounding local businesses, adding to the community’s concerns.
Investigation: Complex and Unfolding
The probe into how the fire started and spread kicked off immediately, with fire investigators teaming up with the police to piece together the full story. But ACO McGown warned: “This is a very complex process and will take time.”
“Our Fire Investigations team are specialists in their own field. They will look at every aspect of this incident – including the cause of the fire, how it spread and what safety measures were in place. It is vital we get the full facts and circumstances,”
Thankfully, there were no reported casualties during the blaze, but the investigation will keep crews on site until every detail is clear.
